There’s something special about someone who loves love. Not to be confused with those infatuated by the fluttering feeling, but rather folks committed to the act of love. Vocalist, songwriter, and composer Gene Noble belongs to the latter club. Noble’s latest single, “Undertones,” is just his latest shining example of his romantic devotion.
The record, which was produced by Johnny “JT” Thomas Jr. and co-written with Kevin Michael, balances the levity of love alongside the comforting reassurance brought forward by intentionality. Similar to that of an onion, people are composed of dozens of layers. On “Undertones,” Noble gently substantiates that even when the tears flow with each layer exposed, he’s willing to explore until every vulnerability has been studied then strengthened.
“Hey, they don’t see you like I see you, babe / Ooh, they lack vision / They can’t feel your undertones / Know you deeper than the surface, babe / Will you show me more of your undertones? / The warms and the cools, yellows and blues. I want to know every shade, every shade of you. Yeah. So show me what you like, baby / I could paint the picture with your undertones / No, I ain’t no Picasso, but I got taste / I can see a good thing when it’s in my face,” sings Gene.
Noble is currently crooning crowds around the country as backing support for Jill Scott, who’s on her To Whom This May Concern Tour. But in a statement shared with ENVERT, Noble spoke about the inspiration behind the tune.
“The real beauty in getting to know someone or falling in love is learning the little nuances that make them who they are beyond the obvious,” said Gene. “The undertones are the things that make us all one-of-one.”
