This year has been one of the biggest years for independent artists in music! But as restrictions continue to be lifted around the world and touring returns, let’s not forget about the healing work the independent electronic and dance music community did to keep us unified safe at home by way of platforms like Twitch and Instagram Live. The party continued for many of us via the safety of our homes.
With dozens of albums released this year alone in the electronic or dance categories, we compiled a list of our top 20 favorite releases. Our list is based on several factors including sonic experimentation, depth of storytelling, innovation, and their replay factor. As a result of this factor, here’s the list we came up with.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on our list or your favorite releases of the year in the comment section!
Second Line by DAWN
Much like the New Orleans–born artist who created it, Second Line is an unapologetic genre bender that pushes boundaries, expands possibilities, and shatters expectations. Its interlocking parts tell an epic story about the quest for artistic expression, with DAWN describing her project as “a movement to bring pioneering Black women in electronic music to the forefront.” To stream the album visit, Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, or purchase on Bandcamp.

The title itself, Rare Pleasure is an appreciation of sharing life, inward reflection and the gift of joyful catharsis in the face of inevitable discord. As Mndsgn describes it, "We are beings living this human life that's only going to happen this way once and only once, every moment infused with a magical impermanence, a rarity." A decade bookended by chapters in Texas, USA and Berlin, Germany, saw Lotic navigate personal hardship and upheaval while garnering acclaim for an expansive production style; unpredictably nestling searing knife’s-edge sound design next to pop music hooks, hypnotic vocal reverie and the lineage of Black club cultures.
