Whether I'm popping in to an open mic night or…
Five years ago, in the midst of a global pandemic, Ego Ella May used her music as an antidote for required distance, emotional longing, and deeper social connection. Following the release of her 2020 debut studio album, Honey For Wounds, Ego Ella May kept supporters nourished with the Fieldnotes EP series.
Yet, the thirst for another standalone full-length project from Ego Ella May remains at an all-time high. Well, pleas from fans (myself included) have been answered. Today (January 14), the “What We Do” singer announces her forthcoming sophomore studio album, Good Intentions.
On March 20, supporters can dive into the full project. But for now, Ego Ella May’s latest offering from the album should hold listeners over. On “What You Waiting For,” the body of work’s most recent single, Ego Ella May does what she does best: craft stories for the soul on an irresistible fusion-forward arrangement.
Ego Ella May’s romantic tunes soaked in contemporary jazz compositions could easily be identified as her musical bread-and-butter. Still, her uptempo diasporic records have quickly become a fan favorite, and “What You Waiting For” proves why.
Produced by Tom Excell, “What You Waiting For” is an infectious, groovy, and affirming song in which Ego Ella May demonstrates her dimensional approach to songmaking.
Just in time for the new year, Ego’s lyrics lessen the anxieties anchored around being bold. Simultaneously, the flow of each instrument demands that as you free your mind, your feet do the same. The shackles of shrinking are broken, and you find yourself floating alongside Ego Ella May’s angelic vocals.
In a statement shared with ENVERT, Ego Ella May gushed about the tune.
“One of my favourite songs to play live, this song is so fun,” she raved. “But holds a deeper meaning about living life NOW, and about presence. Quite simply, don’t wait! The time is now.”
She continued: “I wrote it about this album as a whole, and trying to conjure up more of a belief in myself and my gifts – and I kept saying to myself, ‘If not now, when?’ It’s the anthem I play when I need a confidence boost!”
