Whether I'm popping in to an open mic night or…
Everyone’s favorite cousin on their daddy’s side is back in the studio. For those not in the family, I’m referring to none other than Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and DJ, Durand Bernarr.
After taking a moment to bask in his whirlwind victory during the 2026 Grammy Awards, Durand has shared his first post-victory track, “Wild Ride.” Alongside fellow Grammy Award-winning multi-faceted producer James Fauntleroy, Durand takes listeners on a slow and sensual excursion of submission.
Despite the record’s titling, “Wild Ride” is not another dazzling showcase of Durand’s signature adrenaline-pumping vocal gymnastics. Instead, “Wild Ride” hones in on Durand’s brilliance as a storyteller. Knowing how to balance out a record is a skill most recording artists seem to underestimate. But not Durand.
Similar to BLOOM‘s “Completed,” on “Wild Ride,” Durand correctly identifies that the track’s lyrics are the most important element.
“Tighter than a seatbelt / That’s why wouldn’t let no one else take over you driving / I’m riding / Don’t need your phone, keep your eyes on the road / You can have the control, don’t rush / You can go slow, slow / And I don’t care where we go / Don’t even need to know / Woah, just go,” sings Durand.
Next is Fauntleroy’s exhilirating production. As Durand paints the picture of letting love lead, Fauntleroy builds the sonic scenery for this hopelessly romantic tale. The ever-present sturdy bass, flares of guitar flirtatiously tucked into the pockets, and valiant kicks represent the busyness of life. Pinned against this backdrop, Durand’s smooth vocal performance symbolizes the dismantling of an illusion of control and the power of surrender—to all things but especially love.
“We are a dangerous pair,” Durand exclaimed to Fauntleroy in the song’s behind-the-scenes clip.
Although I am admittedly a fan of Durand’s vocal theatrics, I have to agree with Durand’s statement. Teased as the “first offering” from Durand’s forthcoming BLOOM follow-up, “Wild Ride” shows that our favorite cousin is not a one-trick pony.

Whether I'm popping in to an open mic night or digital crate-digging for hours through my favorite digital streaming platform, finding indie artists is the name then telling their story is the game.
