It’s been two years since Dua Saleh‘s last full-length project. But in a few weeks, that will change. The singer, songwriter, and producer will drop their highly anticipated follow-up to 2022’s Crossover.
So far, Dua Saleh has shared three singles off their forthcoming album, I Should Call Them, “Want,” “Time & Time Again” featuring Sid Sriram, and “Unruly” featuring serpentwithfeet. Each release explored the R&B-infused electronic indie-pop concoction Dua Saleh has become known and loved for. Although the sound may be similar to previous projects, Dua Saleh took to Instagram to describe what makes the upcoming body of work different from what’s currently available in their discography.
“As I have grown as a person, I realized that I’m sort of guarded,” they wrote. “Sometimes, it’s difficult to be vulnerable and to share parts of myself that I haven’t really wanted to confront. I’ve always written about my life. But, was often timid with expression (cloaking lyrics in a veil that offered obscurity).”
Dua went on to talk about the creative journey they embarked on this project. “Now, I’m leaning into my raw emotions more than ever,” they wrote. “Allowing myself to dance to the rhythm of the universe. I was beckoned by a force of nature to do this, and it almost feels like a quest, an oddessy-like experience. The songs on this album are an experimental itineration—they’re sonically complex and blend genres that float freely in my mind. At the heart of it all, it’s a collection of songs that portray the spiritual power, resilience, joy of love, & pain of heartbreak found b/n two lovers.”
