Los Angeles-based musician and producer Don DiestrO digs deep into his songwriter’s trunk on new single, “Skin Too Black” featuring fellow West Coast recording artist Ventage. Fueled by the heartbreak and angry from the murder of Minneaoplis man, George Floyd, DiestrO channels that rage into the accompanying music video.
“I can’t even speak my mind because my skin too Black / can’t even cross that line ‘cause my skin too Black, fight picket signs ‘cause my skin too Black, they won’t let me shine ‘cause my skin too Black,” belts out DiestrO.
To combat the negative stereotypes, in the video DiestrO features the many faces of the African-American community from Black lovers to Black artists. Stating in the opening frame, “we reached out to individuals in the community to showcase black excellence”.
Dressed in 1960s Black Panther Party uniform, DiestrO pays tribute to victims of police brutality including Michael Brown signing “hands up don’t shoot,” as well as Eric Garner harmonizing his infamous last words, “I can’t breathe” .
