Back in January, Death Cab For Cutie announced their departure from Atlantic Records. After over a two-decade-long partnership, the “I Will Follow You into the Dark” musicians were heading for more independent pastures.
Six months after entering into their new partnership with ANTI- Records, Death Cab For Cutie’s highly anticipated debut on the label is nearly here. This Friday, June 5, I Built You A Tower, will hit streaming platforms.
According to the album’s liner notes, I Built You A Tower is “the sound of loss, compartmentalization, and then grief bursting out from the seams.”
But the album’s true sonic goal is to encapsulate “the sound of the growth that comes after falling apart, of acknowledging pain without letting it destroy you.”
In a statement shared with ENVERT, Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie spoke about the inspiration behind the album.
“I see the tower existing on your emotional horizon,” said Gibbard. “You don’t always have to look at what’s inside it, but it’s a reminder that it happened. You know it’s there. You have to face it.”
I Built You A Tower features lyrical contributions from Gibbard as well as fellow Death Cab For Cutie members Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper, and Zac Rae. The album, which was recorded at Animal Rites in Los Angeles, California, was produced and engineered by John Congleton.
Other I Built You A Tower contributions include Sean Cook (engineering), Rachel White (engineering), Carlos de la Garza (mixing), and Matt Colton (mastering).
