Death Cab for Cutie is now an independent act. After the Grammy Award-nominated band’s 22-year partnership with Atlantic Records, that is a sentence fans never thought they would read.
Well, in a press announcement, Death Cab for Cutie revealed they had inked a new deal with ANTI- Records. Their new label home followed up the news with a posting on its official website welcoming Death Cab for Cutie to the roster.
Within the posting, ANTI- emphasized that the move was a full circle moment for Death Cab for Cutie.
“This partnership marks a return to the band’s independent roots, which began with their 1997 formation and continued through their first four albums on Barsuk Records,” read ANTI-‘s announcement.
In a statement from the band, frontman Ben Gibbard expressed their excitement for this fresh start.
“We are thrilled to be joining the roster at ANTI- which includes some of our favorite artists, old friends, and in many cases, both,” said Gibbard. “We also can’t wait to begin this new chapter with the wonderful staff at ANTI- and share with you what we’ve been working on.”
Death Cab for Cutie haven’t shared any details about their forthcoming debut on the label. But the group did roll out their latest tour plans. Following a headlining appearance at Outside Days Festival in May, Death Cab for Cutie will kick off their North American tour.
The 20-date run will feature support from Jay Som, Japanese Breakfast, and Nation of Language. Death Cab for Cutie raved about the upcoming tour, in a joint statement saying, “We’re excited to be going out on tour this summer in North America. One of our favorite parts of being in this band is getting to be out on the road with artists that inspire us.”
They continued: “Japanese Breakfast, Jay Som, and Nation of Language have made some of our favorite albums in recent years, and we’re stoked they’ll be joining us.”
Japanese Breakfast returned the love in her e-mail newsletter, announcing the news, writing: “INDIE GIRL finally gets to open for her favorite band!”
