The independent hip-hop community is in deep mourning. According to messages across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), rapper, songwriter, and creative entrepreneur Chelsea Reject has passed away.

Across Chelsea Reject’s career, she released a slew of mixtapes, albums, and collaborative tracks with artists such as Jean Deaux, CJ Fly, Mick Jenkins, Kota The Friend, and most recently, T’nah. In 2024, Chelsea and T’nah toured their joint Rogue project across Japan.

“RIP to a sweet soul Chelsea Reject,” wrote rapper Radamiz on X. “I remember our show together for Dyme’s showcase in 2011, talking for hours before confidence and sharing a production studio as a hotel in Chicago on tour. MANY shows. The many shared moments. I saw it up close, the tenacity and heart. We’ll honor you.”
“Not you, baby girl. I can’t emphasize enough how badly we just lost one. love you forever, sis 🕊️❤️🩹,” penned Nitty Scott.
“[I] don’t know what to say. How to feel. What to do. But I’ll get to y’all soon,” wrote T’nah on Instagram. “The messages are just really overwhelming. If you knew people who loved her, check on them. Check on each other. I know that we are all grieving together. She was that impactful and more.”

Whether I'm popping in to an open mic night or digital crate-digging for hours through my favorite digital streaming platform, finding indie artists is the name then telling their story is the game.
