Back in 2023, billy woods released his studio album, Maps. The body of work was woods’ last full-length release. For two years, supporters have patiently waited for his follow-up. Next month, that project will officially hit streaming platforms.
On Golliwog, woods’ reconnects with longtime collaborator Kenny Segal. The album will also feature production from The Alchemist, Kenny Segal, EL-P, Conductor Williams, Preservation, Messiah Musik, Sadhugold, Ant (Atmosphere), Shabaka Hutchings, Steel Tipped Dove, DJ Haram, Willie Green, Jeff Markey, Saint Abdullah, and Human Error Club. ELUCID, Cavalier, Bruiser Wolf, Despot, Al.Divino, and Yolanda Watson will also appear on Golliwog.
“Misery,” the album’s lead single, lays the creative foundation for what’s to come with Golliwog. In a statement woods’ spoke about the inspiration behind the project. “When I was nine years old I wrote a story about an evil golliwog,” he said. “My mother read it and told me it was overly derivative and needed some work. Here we are.”
woods’ described as: “A haunting collection that weaves horror, humor, surrealism and Afropessimism into a cinematic tapestry, aided and abetted by a murderer’s row of producers.”
