Have you ever wondered why 11:11 is a time worthy of closing your eyes and making a wish? Angel numbers are thought to be divine messages sent down from angels, usually in a pattern repetitively appearing to people. A repeated one is all about manifestation, hence said wish at 11:11. The number eight, however, is about balance, success, and prosperity. Success and prosperity—I see why anyone would want that omen in place of their literal name, but balance is a little more perplexing and perhaps even insightful.
Well, part of the answer happens to lie in the name behind one recent Dylan Wiggins produced single, “Habit” (via AMo/Cash App Studios). When I sat down to do one simple search online for the artist behind the single, Angelnumber 8, the first thing that became exceedingly apparent was his unsearchable online presence, and the second was something else vitally important.
“Habit” is two minutes of catchy beats and phrases with electronically satisfying synths. The beginning beats draw you in with a quick pace, blending into a consistent chorus with stronger vocals. It’s begging you to tap your foot to the beat, and I found it practically impossible to dislike.
But its accompanying music video is where things get a little strange. Angelnumber 8 goes on a series of dates— laying in nature, getting a romantic dinner, and looking at the city landscape at night— but not with a fellow human, rather, with a CGI butterfly, dressed in human-bug form himself. At the end of the video, someone just steps on the bug, killing it. When Angelnumber 8 looks up at the culprit, it’s a man with the head of a bug.
Lyrically, Angelnumber 8 is seemingly singing about a partner who he fell deeply, and quickly for, shown through lyrics like “Learned you like a habit from the very kiss / hooked me like an addict on the very first hit.” At some point in their relationship, it feels like the partner started drifting, putting up walls in pursuit of something else that wasn’t their love. Angelnumber 8 then expresses how he feels like he’s “holding on to a thread / bending / twisting / with limbs / breathless,” like any respective lover would feel as that counterpart. Really all I think he’s asking for, is balance.
But what was still puzzling to me was the insects. I thought about how it could resemble love’s fleetingness, like stepping on a bug or a metaphor for balance— but I couldn’t come up with anything I was satisfied with, so I asked Angelnumber 8.
“The bug is my idea of someone who feels or looks different. Feeling that way I guess makes you feel weird to others or in Habit’s case— extraterrestrial.
