The observant, poetic, and down-to-earth Noname exhibits inspirations including Lauryn Hill and André 3000, but the rapper is in a lane of her own with unflappable and conversational verses offering everything from intense self-reflection and offhanded put-downs to strong Black affirmation and considered anti-capitalist thought. These qualities shade her independent full-length projects Telefone (2016), Room 25 (2018), and Sundial (2023). Two years after the release of the latter, Noname returned with "Hundred Acres," a casually celebratory track featuring a hook from Devin Morrison. The single was billed as a preview of her fourth project, Cartoon Radio. Born Fatimah Warner in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, Noname frequented open-mike nights and slam poetry competitions when she wasn't volunteering with the local YOUMedia arts program. Her audience began to widen in 2013, the year she appeared on Mick Jenkins' Trees & Truths and Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap. After she guested on Jenkins' The Waters, Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment's Surf, Chance the Rapper's Coloring Book, and Jamila Woods' HEAVN, among other releases, she made her proper debut in July 2016 with the self-issued Telefone. Three years in the making, its reflective coming-of-age tales featured productions from a strictly Chicagoan cast of Cam O'bi, Phoelix, Saba, and Monte Booker. The mixtape landed in year-end lists from numerous publications, and Coloring Book shortly thereafter won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, consequently increasing anticipation for Noname's follow-up project. Recorded during a monthlong period following touring and a move to Los Angeles, the comparatively expansive Room 25 -- with Phoelix the lone production collaborator -- arrived in September 2018 to a similarly warm reception. Nearly five years would pass before Noname's third full-length. The rapper thought about quitting music due to frustrations and other pursuits such as a book club. She went on hiatus, though in 2020 she did release the Madlib-produced "Song 33," a response to criticism from J. Cole, and vowed to direct her earnings from the track to Black mutual aid funds. In August 2023, she returned with Sundial, her third full-length. The deeply thoughtful and questioning set featured collaborations with Common, Billy Woods, Jay Electronica, and Jimetta Rose with the Voices of Creation.
