Nearly three years have passed since the release of Allison Russell‘s album, The Returner. But the Grammy and Americana Award-winning singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist hasn’t let her musical storytelling flame dim. Between the “Eve Was Black” vocalist’s consistent touring schedule, acclaimed Broadway run, and activism work, Russell has channelled her art in endless ways.
With even more creative fuel, Russell is ready to share In The Hour Of Chaos, her highly anticipated studio follow-up to The Returner. Given the ferocity of the project’s lead singles, “Rainbows,” “No Springtime,” “Cold April,” and “Black Lavender,” In The Hour Of Chaos is another example of Russell’s masterful reflection of the times.
In the linear notes provided by Fantasy Records, the label describes the project as “a fervent plea for connection in this time of alienation, isolation, and dread.”
Alongside the press materials, Russell spoke about the inspiration behind the album.
“These are songs meant to reverse the tides that pull us farther and farther apart, even from ones we love the most,” said Russell. “This is a record meant to make you feel GOOD, and, in these times, feeling good is a radical act.”
In The Hour Of Chaos features a host of guest appearances, including Joy Oladokun, Julie Williams, Kara Jackson, Denitia & Explore! Pop Choir, Brittney Spencer, Norah Jones, Ruby Amanfu, Kyshona, Sara Watkins, Devon Gilfillian, Kashus Culpepper, Chibueze Ihuoma, and Ahya Simone.
