Last year, Skylar Grey expanded her 2019 EP, Angel With Tattoos, into a full-length album. The 10-track pop project added upon Grey’s growing artistic expansion. Less than six months following its release, Grey is back with a follow-up body of work.
This week, Grey was drop her studio album, Wasted Potential. With five singles (“Nirvana,” “Motivation,” “Plastic Water Bottles,” “Black n’ Blue,” and “Come”) out for fans to enjoy, Grey’s artistic vision is crystal clear, deepening her storytelling.
During an appearance on the Meet Me In Napa podcast hosted by Jeremy Jackson, Grey discussed her growth as an artist, which hyperfocused on her journey as a songwriter and producer. But the most enticing part of the conversation rested on the creative vision behind Wasted Potential.
“I feel like I was envisioning my life when I was younger in my career; I saw something totally different,” confessed Grey. “[…] I thought I’d be on top of the world. I’m not saying that I haven’t been successful, but I have not been as successful as the dream I had envisioned […] Looking back at my whole career, I realized that every mistake or thing I did along the way that stopped my growth was all my fault.”
Based on Grey’s reflection during the interview, it appears self-sabotage is a core theme of Wasted Potential. Grey went on to mention that the album’s title was also pulled from the “Takes too much effort to be influential / R.I.P. to my wasted potential” lyric within her single, “Motivation.”
Wasted Potential features production by Sage Skolfield, Danny Majic, Bryan Yepes, Bangs, and Jonathan Hernandez.
