Nevermind Cupid this Valentine’s Day, Arlo Parks is ready to pull at fans’ heartstrings now. Nearly three years ago, Grammy Award-nominated singer and songwriter released their beloved sophomore album, My Soft Machine. After leaving fans yearning for more music, Parks is back and ready to oblige.
Arlo Parks’ new single “2Sided,” which was produced by Baird and Rob Bisel, serves as the lead single for their forthcoming studio album, Ambiguous Desire. In alignment with the upcoming body of work’s title, “2Sided” doesn’t have a cut-and-dry sonic direction.
With each passing note, “2Sided” grants listeners a one-way ticket into the disorienting world of Parks’ imagined love life. Between the heart-racing instrumentation, a staple in electronic, distraught songwriting that makes rock so irresistible, and methodical song structuring of pop, “2Sided” is Arlo Parks at their artistic finest.
“There’s a sadness that / I really can’t shake / And my vision’s got a few stripes / I never really feel at home anywhere / It’s the right place at the wrong time / I feel my heartbeat climb / The moonlight cuts / through white / My friends are all inside / The heat and the dark / My head is so clouded / You know how I feel / Tell me it’s two sided,” sings Parks.
In a statement shared with ENVERT, Parks spoke about the musical mission of the track.
“At its core, ‘2SIDED’ is about yearning and tension,” said Parks. “It’s about being struck by a bolt of desire and building up the courage to put language to that feeling, to make it real.”
Parks’ heart may be brushed up, but it surely won’t be in vine as “2Sided” has the makings of a generational dance floor banger.
As for the first Ambiguous Desire offering, over on Instagram, Parks opened about what supporters should expect from the album, writing, “This has been 2+ years of blood, sweat, tears, dancing hard, and loving deeply. I challenged myself to write it exactly how it felt, to strip everything down to what was essential, to be on some knife-edge energy…”
