The inventive indie rock quartet Mamalarky incorporate elements of noise, psychedelia, and technicolor pop. They emerged in 2018 with the EP Fundamental Thrive Hive before unveiling their dynamic eponymous full-length debut in 2020. The band experimented further on 2022's Pocket Fantasy, which assimilated field recordings and various household objects into their playful sound. Mamalarky made their Epitaph Records debut with 2025's even more vibrant and intricate Hex Key.
Founded in 2016, the band originated in Austin, Texas, but eventually split between Texas, California, and Georgia. Comprised of guitarist Livvy Bennett (ex-Cherry Glazerr), keyboardist Michael Hunter (White Denim), drummer Dylan Hill, and bassist Noor Khan, the quartet issued their debut EP, Fundamental Thrive Hive, in 2018, and spent the next two years putting together their first full-length effort. The resulting Mamalarky was released in late 2020 on Fire Talk Records.
When the COVID-19 pandemic reached the States, Bennett, Hunter, and Khan rented a house together in Khan's hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, recording much of their second album within its walls. Hill contributed long-distance from Austin, eventually making recording trips to Atlanta. The completed Pocket Fantasy arrived on Fire Talk in September 2022.
Around that time, Bennett and Hunter headed to Los Angeles, where they started producing other artists from their home studio. That's where Mamalarky recorded their next album with only the bandmembers' involvement until the point at which the 13-track set was mastered by Joe LaPorta. Experimentation and a guiding principle to not repeat themselves resulted in the sonically fluorescent Hex Key, their April 2025 Epitaph label debut. Its diverse track list touched on woozy alt-R&B, shimmery noise pop, and trippy art rock. - Biography by Marcy Donelson
