Tuesday, September 5
PIANOS
New York City, New York
The Scottish troubadour has been making a name for himself north of the border since he started to write and perform in 2012. Following a path first trodden by the likes of Nick Drake in the ‘70s and, more recently, popular artists such as Ben Howard, Damien Rice and David Gray, Neil McLaren has been able to run with these influences and push them that little bit further by creating a sound that is very much his own. This sound has seen him pick up support from XFM Scotland, STV, The Daily Record and Amazing Radio.

Ian Sweet
Wednesday, September 7
Boot & Saddle
Philadelphia, PA
Nervy indie pop trio IAN SWEET began as the solo vehicle for singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jilian Medford. While still living in Boston, Medford had been recording and performing as a solo artist under moniker IAN, an old high school nickname bestowed upon her by her skater friends. A last minute cancellation from a touring drummer in 2014 led her to work with Tim Cheney, with whom she quickly forged a creative connection and burgeoning friendship. By the time she recruited bassist Damien Scalise, the project had evolved from a solo endeavor to a trio and adopted the new name IAN SWEET.

Haley Bonar
Thursday, September 8
World Cafe Live
Philadelphia, PA
Haley Bonar, born near Winnipeg, raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and later based in St. Paul, Minnesota, is in the same musical orbit of the dreamy Minnesotans Low. (Her debut album, The Size of Planets, was even released on Low leader Alan Sparhawk’s own label, Chairkicker’s Union.) However, her sparse take on folk-rock displays little of Low’s narcotic gloom, and more pertinent comparisons include Mazzy Star, Shannon Wright, and Elliott Smith. Accompanying herself alternately on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, or various keyboards, Bonar delivers her minor-key tunes and elliptical lyrics in a haunting, delicate voice at times reminiscent of both Aimee Mann and Gillian Welch.

Crystal Castles
Thursday, September 8
The Loft
Atlanta, GA
Fusing lo-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath’s solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra’s dwelling in the He-Man and Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it’s also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band’s distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles’ lineup was complete. One of the songs the pair recorded, “Alice Practice,” was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on MySpace piqued record labels’ interest.

The Saint Johns
Thursday, September 8
Vinyl
Atlanta, GA
A Nashville-based duo who seamlessly blend open-road Americana with hook-driven guitar pop, the Saint Johns were founded in 2008 by Florida natives Louis Johnson and Jordan Meredith. The pair, who met at a party and kept each other up all night playing their favorite covers, began making their own music together shortly thereafter, eventually relocating to New York City before settling down in Nashville.
With their writing, recording, and touring chops firmly in place, they issued their debut EP, Open Water, in 2013 via Bailey Blues Music. Critical buzz eventually led to an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, as well as a record deal with Sony imprint Kemosabe Records. They recorded their debut studio long-player, 2016’s Dead of Night, with Grammy Award-winning producer David Kahne.

Khruangbin
Friday, September 9
Bowery Ballroom
New York City, New York
Khruangbin is a three-piece band from Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums. The trio’s first single ‘A Calf Born In Winter’ was released in May 2014 by Late Night Tales offshoot Night Time Stories, and saw support from DJs Zane Lowe, Cerys Matthews, Tom Ravenscroft, Gideon Coe and magazines as musically diverse as Test Pressing, For Folks Sake, i-D, The 405 and Ransom Note. ‘The Infamous Bill’ is an expanded offering of Khruangbin’s exotic, individual sound. The EP’s four tracks were recorded at their spritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where Khruangbin’s first rehearsals took place. Taking influence from 1960’s Thai funk – Khruangbin literally translates to “Engine Fly” in Thai – the EP is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool.

Bright Light Bright Light
Friday, September 9
Music Hall of Williamsburg
Brooklyn, New York
The brainchild of folk singer Rod Thomas, Bright Light Bright Light is an electro-pop outfit influenced by artists as diverse as Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, and Ace of Base. Growing up between two villages in the South Wales valleys, Thomas learned how to play several instruments from an early age, and started busking in the London Underground in his teens. In 2006, he released several singles under his own name through his own label, Self Raising Records, before creating Bright Light Bright Light, named after a line in Gremlins. After working on material with Boom Bip and Andy Chatterley (Kylie Minogue), he supported Marina & the Diamonds and the Noisettes on their U.K. tours, and remixed tracks for Ellie Goulding and Nerina Pallot.

Gold Panda
Saturday, September 10
Johnny Brenda’s
Philadelphia, PA
Mixing samples into a swirling yet laid-back stew, a musical mélange somewhere between DJ Shadow and Four Tet, London-based knob turner Gold Panda began to stir an underground buzz in the late 2000s. A retiring sort with the given name Derwin, Gold Panda began his electronic experiment as a lark in the late ’90s as a teenager, chopping up pop songs with abandon on his music producer uncle’s sampler. By his late twenties, he was remixing tracks for Bloc Party and Little Boots, and turning the ears of tastemakers with his original hip-hop and trance-laced compositions. Before and You were released in 2009, with Lucky Shiner following soon after in 2010. After contributing a mix for the !K7 label’s DJ-Kicks series in 2011, Derwin did some traveling, which ultimately inspired an international music concept for his 2013 sophomore outing, Half of Where You Live.

DANK
Saturday, September 10
Smith’s Olde Bar
Atlanta, GA
Dank, formerly Dank Sinatra, is the next installment in what is a long and storied history of Rock and Roll music. Combining rhythm and blues tradition with a modern sense of urgency and experimentation, Dank is pulling Rock music into the 21st century as it was meant to be heard and experienced. With energetic and unpredictable live performances, as well as a knack for the studio and all of its wizardry, this Atlanta five-piece is showing fans what it takes to rock in the torrid seas of a post-Napster musical climate. It’s hard to pin down exactly what the Dank will become, or how far the band has come to get to where it is today, but at the core of this outfit is a red hot soul and a burning sense of modern day Rock and Roll magic.
