No one does it like Boris. The experimental doom metal/drone trio from Tokyo has pumped out some of the most relevant music in the genre over the last three decades. Now on their own label Fangs Anal Satan, the trio returns with one of the most explosive doom albums of 2020, NO. To celebrate they’re finally bringing the album to streaming platforms a year later. The band performed the album’s lead single “Loveless” via a glorious 360-degree video livestream.
Unlike their recent albums which feature long experimental drone pieces, NO shows Boris playing some of their shortest songs in years. The tracklist features refined song structures and melodies that are reminiscent of the band’s doom metal of the 2000s. While “Loveless” still clocks in at 6 minutes and 40 seconds as the longest song on the album, it still feels like a return to form for fans.
The video for this song is wild. The interactive video allows the viewer to click and drag to move around the perspective and see each of the members surrounding the camera. The set positions the band in a circle, with all their amps and instruments facing the center. Between the harsh lighting, the members’ lavish metal outfits, and fog machines smoking up the room, the performance is surreal, like the band is trying to overwhelm you with the song.
The reissues of 2020’s NO and 2000’s Flood include exclusive vinyl releases and long-awaited publishing of both albums to streaming platforms later this year.
