Mix together Bon Iver emotional punch, Beatles-esque harmonies, and lowercase lyricism then you will have the wonderful concoction that is Daisy the Great’s soft songs. The songwriting stars soak listeners in surrounding vocals and contemplative acoustic guitar on the new EP, perfect for sunny days spent in wide open meadows. Brooklyn indie-pop duo composed of Mina Walker and Kelly Nicole Dugan delivered 6 quiet tracks that touch on love, poorly timed sadness, and homespun memories.. From opening song, mmmmm through finale track, to be alive”, Daisy the Great guides listeners by the hand through this audial feast.

The opening tune, “mmmmm”, acts more as a mood setter than a strong individual song. The duo uses this initial minute to lull their audience into a quiet meditative state. With “mmmmm”, it begins to feel as if you are floating on a cloud while the band serenades the sky around you.

“guess it’s just a bad time to be sad”, a track featured in the middle of the EP, is a balanced blend of melancholy verses and a funnily upbeat hook. The guitar jauntily plucks along as vocals ponder,  “guess its a bad time / to be sad / what a shame / oh I wanna be closer to someone to hold at the bottom of all of this what do I got / but myself and my stuff and my thoughts”. The rhythmic repetition of the tune gives an earworm quality relaxed melody they will surely be hummed hours after the song has finished.

The final track of this release, “ to be alive”, begins with the same emotional energy as the other songs. The vocals swarm with a dark unrest that is masked behind sweet melodic phrases. Although this EP is dynamically leveled throughout, it is just the right length so as not to become repetitive. Daisy the Great has succeeded in creating an album that acts as more of a whole experience rather than just great individual tracks. Each song works with the ones before it to create a murmur of a pastel world. So get out an old quilt, take off your shoes, and wander into this beautifully soft experience alongside them.
