The woman in red is back again. New York-based singer and songwriter, Caroline Rose has come roaring to the forefront of the indie scene with her latest album Superstar (via New West Records).
Known for her signature look and synth-pop tunes, Rose is no stranger to the concepts addressed through her songs. The album artwork alone as a political statement that aims to crush Hollywood’s standard of overly processed women musicians.
Songs such as “Pipe Dreams” and “Got To Go My Own Way” dive off of this platform to explore the wide and complex range of Rose’s emotions. The compilation of electro-heavy tunes, reminiscent of a disco-tech from the 80’s serves as the second chapter for the character Rose began developing in her previous album, Loner. This project, on the other hand, follows themes of stardom, heartbreak, beauty standards, and contradictions. Superstar takes the character creation to the next level, following a single story throughout the tunes.
Although this album holds its own instrumentally, the aspect that truly sets it apart from many other indie releases are the lyrics on single “Feel The Way I Want” Rose sings, “but everybody’s so quick to stand up and say/gotta be this way or that way/gotta ask yourself, is this really what I wanted/everybody’s so quick to fly up and say/you gotta keep your sh*t together/ well baby watch me freak out!”
These are the lyrics that will be scribbled in highschool notebooks. sung amongst friends into hairbrushes, and will reverberate through an entire generation that in one way or another understands this pressure. Superstar is a personal quest covered in lip gloss and glitter, but, underneath it all is the sense of how necessary it is to find yourself in a world that can so easily change you.
